Phone snatchers, posing as tricycle operators, have been arrested by the police in Kano State, the command’s spokesman, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, has revealed.

He said the suspects, Mohammed Jidda, 20, and Adamu Sulaiman, 22, are residents of Brigade Quarters in Kano Metropolis who specialised in stealing the mobile phones of unsuspecting passengers along State Road under the pretext of using a tricycle with KAROTA number KBY 0126.

They were arrested on June 25, 2022, at State Road Kano with the said tricycle in possession of three suspected stolen mobile phones.

Kiyawa added that during investigation, the suspects confessed to the crime, and further disclosed that they specialised in using the tricycle to snatch the mobile phones of their unsuspecting passengers. 

“They all confessed to taking intoxicants and have been operating along Tukur Road, State Road, Zaria Road, and other places within Kano metropolis for over one year.

“One of the suspects, Mohammed Jidda, further confessed that he was arrested sometime back for the same offense, charged to court, and sentenced to six months in the correctional centre with an option of fine.

The fine was paid and he was released after spending three months in jail.

The Commissioner of Police, Sama’ila Shuaibu Dikko, ordered for discreet investigation, after which the suspects would be charged to court. 

The mobile phones stolen from passengers were returned to their owners after they were traced.
