Detectives attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a suspected teenage armed robber whose gang members had allegedly been terrorising traders at Iddo, Oyingbo and Ebute-Meta areas of Lagos.
A police source said the suspect was arrested penultimate Saturday at about 8.00p.m. The suspect, Ibraheem Taiwo, 17, was arrested when he, alongside his accomplice, Abdullahi, who is still at large, allegedly attempted to rob a commercial tricycle (Keke Marwa) operator. But Ibraheem said that it was Abdullahi that used a jack knife to dispossess the tricyclist, identified as Chibuke Okeke, of his two mobile phones, money and other valuables. He added that Abdullahi dropped the two mobile phones and the jack knife when he spotted the oncoming policemen.
The victim, Okeke, however told the police that it was Ibraheem that led the two-man gang that dispossessed him of his belongings with the aid of a jack knife.
Ibraheem, a secondary school drop-out turned vulcanizer, said in his statement to the police: "I was standing by the roadside, trying to take Keke Marwa to Oyingbo when I heard the shout of ‘thief’, ‘thief’. I saw Abdullahi dropped the handsets and a jack knife and I picked them up. That was how RRS operatives arrested me.
"I have been learning vulcanizing for over six years; I was preparing for my freedom. It was Abdullahi, my friend that robbed. He dropped the phones and the jack knife when he was being chased. I only picked them up to defend myself. Abdullahi is a friend and a sweeper in Oyingbo. I know where he lives. He is the one that put me into this problem. I only followed him to Iddo."
