Police arrest teacher for torturing 8-year-old student

Police in Kano have arrested an Almajiri school teacher, Ma’aruf Muhammad, 24, for the alleged gruesome torture of an 8-year-old Almajiri boy, Muhammad Garba, studying under his care in Nguru, Bauchi State. 

The scarred body allegedly from beating had trended on social media in Kano, spurring actions from government officials and security agencies.

The spokesman of the Kano Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the incident was reported to the Command by the Managing Director Kano State Agency for Evacuation and Repatriation of Beggars, after the boy was found roaming around a culvert near Kofar Mata Quarters Kano.

According to Kiyawa, the victim was taken to the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital Kano where he was treated and discharged, adding that a team was raised to arrest the suspect. 

“On a preliminary investigation, the victim stated that he hails from Nguru, Yobe State, and he escaped to Kano State by train as a result of severe beatings by his teacher at the almajiri school.”

“On discreet investigation, the suspect confessed to the crime; he further confessed that he used a USB cable to beat the victim on several occasions after removing his shirt.”

The police spokesman added that the suspect would be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.
