The police in Lagos State have arrested a 30-year-old woman for allegedly inflicting grievous bodily injuries on her 16-year-old daughter.

The arrest was sequel to a case of child abuse reported by an orphanage, Chosen Child Orphanage Home, alleging child abuse against the woman.

The police said the orphanage, acting on behalf the victim whose upper and lower right limbs were allegedly burnt, said Ayo Sheriff was her biological mother.

The suspect allegedly inflicted grievous bodily injuries on the victim using electric pressing iron over minor misunderstanding. 

The Lagos State Police spokesman, Chike Oti, who confirmed the report, said the orphanage home had explained what happened to the police.

Oti said what actually led to the abuse was that the victim, who is a student of a secondary school and also a part time student nurse in auxiliary capacity, was given the sum of N500 by her boss with an instruction to hand N200 to someone on her way home, use N50 as transport fare and return the balance of N250 to him the next day. According to him, on the day she was supposed to return the balance of the money to her boss, the victim defaulted. She told her boss that the money was with her mother. The boss called her mother on the phone who she denied knowledge of the money. 

He said: “When the victim returned home from work, her mother who was already waiting for her, plugged an electric iron and waited until it was red hot. At this stage, she used the red hot iron to welcome her daughter home, accusing her of being a disgrace to the family.”

Oti said, “The Gender Section of the command had concluded investigation into the case and would charge the suspect before the Ikeja Magistrate Court today.”
