Community policing is the most effective method to eradicate crime in the society because it encourages cooperation and interaction between the police and community in exposing crime and getting the culprits.

 The Commissioner of Police in charge of Crime Prevention and Community Safety stated this, yesterday, at one-day policy dialogue on the future of Community Policing in Nigeria organised by Partners West Africa Nigeria in Abuja.

 CP Austin Iwar said the community police system has been widely accepted because it provides a situation where the people of the community are involved in deciding how they should be policed.

On her part, the Executive Director, Partners West Africa Nigeria (Rule of Law and Empowerment Initiative), Kemi Okenyodo, said there was need to integrate community policing system or non-state security providers into the country’s national security system.

Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Vice President on the Rule of Law, Akingbolahan Adeniran, stressed the need for effective intelligence gathering by the police to ensure that their duties are properly carried out.
