The police in Benue State on Thursday cautioned residents of the state to be wary of indiscriminate human activities around the banks of the River Benue.

Our correspondent reports that many people in the past, especially, children had drown in the river while playing, washing or fetching water, as well as from travelling boats which capsized.

The police spokesman in the state, DSP Catherine Anene, who handed the warning on behalf of the Commissioner of Police (CP), Mukaddas Garba, said the attention of the command had been drawn to increased human activities on the banks of the river, with particular reference to children who are most times seen fetching water, fishing and bathing.

She said, “In view of the above, it has become imperative to take proactive measures to prevent people from drowning within this period. Parents and guardians are advised to restrict their children/wards from loitering around the river banks and people travelling through the waterways are advised to use safety gadgets and sail carefully to avoid mishap.”

DSP Anene appreciated most of the people living and working on the river banks for their usual support to marine police officers in times of need and urged them to continue to caution people who came around the river and were ignorant of the dangers of water.
