Four police officers have been detained in Kwara State over the alleged extortion of a student from the Federal Polytechnic, Offa.
The officers, attached to the anti-cultism unit, are currently being held at the ‘A’ Division Police Station in Ilorin, following an investigation ordered by the Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo.
The development followed allegations that the officers extorted N200,000 from the student, Taiwo Kayode Taye, after he refused to unlock his mobile phone.
The incident reportedly occurred in Erin-Ile, a town in Kwara State, while Taiwo was travelling to Osogbo in Osun State.
According to reports, Taiwo was initially taken to the Ijagbo Police Division and later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Ilorin.
There, the officers allegedly compelled him to unlock his phone and coerced him into transferring N200,000 to an account bearing the name Lucy Akor.
The incident has sparked public outrage, with many calling on the police authorities to sanction those involved.
Speaking with Daily Trust on Thursday evening, CP Adekimi Ojo confirmed the detention of the officers and assured that the case is being handled with utmost seriousness.
“The officers have been arrested and taken into custody. We are actively investigating the matter and will ensure that justice is served,” he said.
CP Ojo condemned the officers’ actions, describing them as unacceptable and a violation of police ethics.
