The police in Anambra State have announced the detention of a 52-year-old man, Ndibe Jude Onyenwe, who was handed over to the command by soldiers of the 302 Artillery Regiment, Onitsha.
The command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the detention in a statement issued Thursday in Onitsha.
Ikenga explained that the suspect is being held in connection with an ongoing investigation into a case of conspiracy, attempted kidnapping, grievous bodily harm, and murder in the Urum Community of Awka North Local Government Area (LGA).
According to the spokesperson, Onyenwe allegedly conspired with others—specifically one Felix Godwin, who is currently at large—to sponsor armed men for a violent ambush along a road in Urum, targeting unsuspecting members of the public. The attack reportedly left six persons with serious gunshot wounds.
During interrogation, the suspect confessed to being part of the plot and revealed that N350,000 was provided to purchase four packets of cartridges used in the operation.
He further admitted that a total sum of N500,000 was paid to hire four gunmen from the Ayamelum LGA of the state.
The PPRO noted that the suspect is currently undergoing further interrogation as investigations continue. (NAN)
