Police detain officers over extortion of N300,000 from furniture maker

The Edo State Police Command has arrested several of its officers for allegedly extorting N300,000 from a furniture maker in Benin City.

The officers, whose identities were not disclosed, are attached to the Oba Market Area Police Command. Their arrest followed a viral social media video alleging the extortion.

According to a statement from the command’s spokesperson, CSP Moses Yamu, the officers involved were promptly identified and arrested. He confirmed that the N300,000 has been fully recovered and returned to the victim.

The officers are currently in detention and will face disciplinary procedures in line with the Nigeria Police Force’s regulations. Additionally, stern administrative measures have been taken against the Oba Market Area Command to ensure professionalism and respect for citizens’ rights.

Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, encourages the public to report any unprofessional conduct by officers to the Public Complaints Bureau (PCB) or the Complaints Response Unit (CRU) of the command.

He affirmed that the command is committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and accountability in its service.
