A tricyclist has been detained by the Gombe State Police Command for the alleged killing of Inspector Kambarawa Wazani. 

The officer was killed on Friday around 7 pm while enforcing the state’s motorcycle ban at the Deputy Governor’s office junction on Bauchi Road.

DSP Buhari Abdullahi, the command’s spokesperson, stated in a press release that the tricyclist was speeding from Jeka da Fari when he hit the officer, who was rushed to the hospital but died shortly after.

“Kambarawa Wazani, 40, was hit by a reckless tricyclist during the enforcement of the motorcycle restriction,” Abdullahi said. “Sadly, he lost his life in the line of duty.”

According to Abdullahi, the tricyclist was taken into custody after being released from the hospital. 

The command urges all road users to follow traffic rules and be cautious, especially near police checkpoints, to prevent accidents and save lives.

In a separate development, Abdullahi dismissed false social media reports about a motorcycle accident at a police checkpoint. 

He clarified that contrary to the claims, the rider was not carrying a pregnant woman and was not attacked by an officer.

The spokesperson explained that the rider, Rabi’u Gidado, was alone on his motorcycle when he saw a Police Patrol 999 team. In an attempt to evade the checkpoint, he accelerated, lost control, and fell, injuring his lower leg. The victim was immediately taken to the Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe for treatment.

“Contrary to fake reports, he was not carrying a pregnant woman,” Abdullahi stressed. “The accident was caused by reckless speeding while he was trying to evade lawful enforcement.” 

He added that efforts are ongoing to find the people who started the misleading report so they can face legal action.

The spokesperson reiterated that the police are committed to public safety, security, and the rule of law.
