Police dock 8 women over alleged public nuisance

The police yesterday docked eight women at a Karshi Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, over alleged public nuisance in Karu and environs.

The defendants – Abraham Soye, Christabel Fripond, Rejoice Jonah, Chidimma Onwigbo, Bella Isaac, Joy Sunday, Jennifer Mbamu and Beauty David – were arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on public nuisance and idleness.

The prosecutor, Mahmud Lawal, told the court that the eight women were arrested on June 9, by a team of policemen led by ASP  Joseph attached to Karu Police Station.

Lawal said the team raided a black spot where criminals and prostitutes used as hideout within Karu jurisdiction from midnight to 4 a.m. following intelligence reports on criminal activities in the area.

He added that the defendants could not give satisfactory account of what they were doing in the area at the time of arrest, saying the offences contravened sections 199 and 405 of the Penal Code.

However, the suspects denied the allegations and the judge, Aliyu Kagarko, granted them bail in the sum of N100,000 each with one surety each in like sum and adjourned the case until Oct. 17 for hearing. (NAN)
