A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Apo, yesterday, granted bail in the sum of N300,000 to a lawyer alleged to have forged a landed property document to defraud another man of N1 million.
The police in FCT, Abuja arraigned the lawyer, Barrister Clifford Eze, on a six-count charge bordering on cheating, breach of trust, forgery and issuance of dud cheques.
Police prosecutor, Barrister Patrick Ogbele, told the court that Eze and others at large, fraudulently collected N1 million from one Asekun Adedoyin on April 16 on the pretext of selling a plot of land to him.
Ogbele said that the land, situated at Jikwoyi, Abuja, did not belong to the lawyer, but the lawyer forged a letter of offer of terms of grant/conveyance of approval, deed of conveyance and power of attorney and presented same as genuine to Adedoyin.
He added that Eze issued two dud Diamond Bank cheques of N500,000 each to Adedoyin which were not honoured due to insufficient funds.
Upon pleading not guilty, the trial judge, Justice Abubakar Idris-Kutigi granted the bail with one surety in like sum, adding that the surety must be a civil servant of not less than Grade Level 8. He adjourned the case to Nov 14.
The offences are said to be in contravention of sections 97, 322, 312, 322, 364 and 366 of the Penal Code.
