Kano state police command has launched accountability unit under Nigerian Policing Programme (NPP) with a view to receiving complaints from the public about the excesses of its personnel.

The initiative, powered by the British Council, was launched in Fagge and Dala Local government areas to foster understanding and sustainable trust between the police and the public.

The focus of the programme, Kano Chronicle learnt, is to eliminate all forms of corrupt practices and issues of human rights violations by security personnel in order to restore confidence of the public in
security agencies.

Speaking at the NPP’s town hall meetings in the two selected local government areas during the launching of the programme, the Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Kano state Police Command, SP Magaji Musa Majia said the programme was aimed at promoting transparency and accountability in state policing.

Majia therefore, urged members of the public not to relent in reporting any form of human rights violation involving the personnel of the force to the units for proper action to be taken.

He said the command had set up offices in four local government areas, to receive complaints against the police for proper redress. 

He warned the public against any form of inducement of police personnel in the course of their work, saying it was against the law to pay before one secures bail of a relative in detention.

Other security agencies that participated in the programme include the NDLEA, DSS, NSCDC, Vigilante, Hisbah and KAROTA.
