The police have arrested two suspects after foiling plans to attack merchant vessels in Lagos.

The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 2 comprising of Lagos and Ogun states, said the suspects are Sunday Sama, 44 and Olorunjuwonlo Elebiju, 35.

He said the suspects were arrested at Ajegunle in Apapa on Monday after police men tracked them to their hideout. The suspects reportedly had in their possession three AK47, an AK49, G-3 rifles and 50 rounds of live ammunition.

It was gathered that the suspects, both from Ondo State, had conspired with some riverine area boys to hijack a vessel but they were dislodged by the Nigerian Navy.

While they were being chased, it was gathered that the brainbox of their double engine boat fell.

It was gathered that Elebiju, the alleged armourer of the gang, was offered N200,000 but given N42,000 part payment to ferry the weapons back to Ondo State.

Trouble, according to the AIG, started for the suspects after Sama, who bought one of the power engines from the gang, was apprehended.

Police said investigation is in progress while efforts are on to arrest other suspects still at large.
