The Osun State Police Command, yesterday, said it had launched a manhunt for a 25-year-old automobile mechanic, Albert Olaposi, who ran away after he allegedly beheaded his five-year-old daughter, Mercy, at Gbongan in Osun State.
The state’s police spokesman, Yemisi Opalola, told Daily Trust that detectives had been detailed to hunt and arrest the suspect.
It was learnt that the deceased was living with her paternal grandmother at Oke-Oje area of Gbongan, while her father lived in another area of the town.
The man was said to have visited the residence of his mother on Monday, took his daughter away and beheaded her.
A resident of Oke-Oje, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the victim’s grandmother raised alarm when she realised that her son had killed the little girl.
The resident said, “The suspect immediately fled the scene when the mother raised the alarm. People around tried to apprehend him, but they could not.”
The police spokesman said the remains of the deceased had been deposited in the morgue of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, and assured that the suspect would be apprehended.
