Police Invitation Of ‘Secrets Reporters’ For Questioning Worries Editors

Editors under the Online Publishers Organisation have raised the alarm over What they described as incessant harassment by security agencies following the invitation of their member, ‘Secret Reporters’ for questioning by the Nigeria Police Force.

The Nigeria Police Force, Special Fraud Unit (PSFU), had invited the media outlet for a fact finding interview.

The official invitation dated January 19, 2026 and signed by DCP Matthew Obiuwevbi, on behalf of the commissioner of police, with reference case number CR 3000 X SFU DIP VOL 70532, stated that the unit is investigating a matter requiring clarifications from the recipient.

The PSFU a specialized arm of the Force Criminal Investigation Department, which focuses on serious and complex fraud cases including those with international dimensions.

The letter addressed to the media house, directed the platform to appear for an interview with the commissioner of police on Monday, January 26, 2026 at 10:00 am prompt through the team manager, Diplomatic Fraud Section at Sunday Adewusi House 13 Milverton Road Ikoyi, Lagos.

The police said the invitation and interview is for fact finding exercise to advance criminal justice delivery and fairness and advised the invitee to bring a lawyer.

Reacting to this, the spokesperson of the Online Publishers, Chidi Nduka said the frequent harassment of its members when a story is published is no longer acceptable.

He noted that the association will monitor the situation on Monday and see what happens after then because “media houses cannot be gagged in the advance society”
