The Kaduna State Police Command has invited former governor of the state, Malam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, alongside some leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over allegations of criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance of public peace, mischief, and causing grievous hurt.

In a letter with reference number CR:3000/KDS/X/D4/vOL.120/199, signed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Uzairu Abdullahi, and addressed to the ADC Chairman in Kaduna, the party was directed to produce the listed members at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for questioning.

Those invited include: Malam Nasir El-Rufai, Bashir Sa’idu, Jafaru Sani, Ubaidullah Mohammed (a.k.a. 30), Nasiru Maikano, Aminu Abita and Ahmed Rufa’i Hussaini (a.k.a. Mikiya).

According to the letter, the police are investigating a petition filed against the accused persons by complainants and they are to present themselves on September 8, 2025.

When contacted by Daily Trust, the ADC North-West Vice Chairman, Jafaru Sani, whose name was also listed, said most of them became aware of the invitation through the social media.

“Yes, most of us only saw the statement on social media,” he said, declining further comments. Calls put through to Nasir El-Rufai’s spokesman, Muyiwa Adekeye, went unanswered. 

 

Recent events in Kaduna  

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) leadership under the coalition in Kaduna State and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have been engaged in a war of words, following an alleged attack on former governor Nasir El-Rufai during a meeting with other members of the coalition in the state.

It was gathered that suspected thugs invaded the venue of the meeting in Kaduna metropolis last Saturday, smashing window glasses and throwing chairs at participants.

Car belonging to residents and party officials were also vandalized, despite the presence of police officers deployed to maintain law and order, Daily Trust gathered.

Daily Trust further learnt that some persons sustained injuries when the suspected thugs threw stones in an attempt to disperse the gathering.

Nasir El-Rufai, who was at the venue to inaugurate a transition committee for the coalition alongside the ADC North West Vice Chairman Jafaru Sani, Bashir Sa’idu, former Chief of Staff, and other coalition chieftains, accused the ruling party of being behind the attack.

However, the APC distanced itself from the incident, insisting the party does not believe in thuggery and would never support it.

In an interview with Daily Trust a few days ago the APC State Secretary, Yahaya Baba-Pate, insisted that the ruling party had no hand in the attack.

“As I always say, APC is a law-abiding political party. We don’t engage in thuggery and we don’t support thuggery. We believe in the tenets of democracy. We can never belittle ourselves and engage in such an unlawful act.

“I can tell you there is no opposition in Kaduna because Governor Uba Sani is doing extremely well. He has been fulfilling his campaign promises in the education sector, health, infrastructure, rural development, security, and above all the inclusiveness that he has been able to achieve in the last two years across all divides in Kaduna State. That is why they are trying to stain our party and our government,” he said.

Nasir El-Rufai, while reacting at the venue, described the incident as shocking.

“Since I came into Kaduna politics in 2013, I have never seen anything like this and throughout the eight years I spent as governor of the state, there was no time our government would call hotels to say they should not allow political meetings to take place or use the police to stop people from meeting and infringe on their freedom of association. I don’t understand what is going on.

“It’s most unfortunate that this is a government that I had a hand in bringing about. I’m quite disappointed and disgusted by this. If authorities don’t take decisive action to end this reintroduction of thuggery into Kaduna politics, God help us, because nobody has monopoly of violence, nobody has monopoly of thugs. We will take steps in the future to ensure no situation like this happen by the grace of God.”

He accused the police of complicity, saying: “The Assistant Commissioner of Police that was there watched while these thugs were attacking people with machetes, destroying people’s vehicles. It is a matter that I will report to the highest levels of the police and the Police Service Commission. I have his picture. He has removed his name tag, which is contrary to police regulations. We will escalate this. We will bring them to justice” he said.

And on Thursday, the leadership of the ADC stakeholders in the North West led by the Chairman, Lawal Batagarawa, former Minister for State for Defence, former Sokoto governor Aminu Tambuwal and Senator Babban Kaita from Katsina visited El’Rufai to commiserate with him over the attack.

The delegation accused the police of complicity in the attack as they called on the authourities  to bring the perpetrators to justice .
