The FCT Police Command has killed two suspected armed robbers in a gun duel after robbers numbering over 30 invaded a community in Lugbe area of the city.
The Commissioner of Police in the FCT, Sadiq Bello, said on March 10, police operatives in Lugbe Division received a distress call from residents of Sauka FHA that armed robbers had invaded the community.
The CP said, “Police operatives from Lugbe Division mobilised to the scene where the robbers opened fire on citing them. The robbers were, however, repelled by the policemen whose superior fire power resulted in the deaths of two of the suspects, while the others escaped.”
CP Bello, who was represented by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Anjuguri Manzah, said following the combing of the area and nearby bushes by the policemen, “two bodies, two locally made pistols, nine flat screen televisions, two laptops, two cutlasses, one knife, one torchlight, wristwatches, jewelry and other valuables were recovered.
“The command wishes to restate its commitment to protect lives and property in the Federal Capital Territory and is also calling on hospitals and members of the public to alert the nearest police station with information about persons cited with bullet wounds,” Bello said.
The CP, while parading the corpses of the suspects, also paraded six suspected armed robbers said to have been arrested on the same day at Banex Junction by policemen on a stop and search operation.
He said the suspects, Emeka Nwafor, Okey David, Onwunali ThankGod, Jim Williams, Emmanuel Okoro and Uchena Chukwuma were intercepted with one locally made pistol and two live cartridges.
“Other exhibits recovered from them are dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp and some charms. The suspects would be transferred to the command’s Criminal Intelligence Department (CID) for discreet investigation,” Bello said.
One of the suspects, Emeka Nwafor, whose arrest led to the arrest of the others, said, “I just came from Enugu on Thursday to trace the killers of my elder brother by cultists. I met with my brother’s friend, Okey, who sent me, alongside this one (pointing at Onwunali ThankGod), to go and withdraw money at an ATM.
Nwafor said, “None of them knew I was with a gun. On our way, I was arrested by the police. I was carrying the gun to protect myself because I know my brother’s killers would be after me once they know I have arrived Abuja.”
He said his brother who was also a cultist was about to be sent on scholarship to a foreign university for a masters by the Federal Government before a rival cult group shot him dead in Abuja.
