The Zamfara State Police Command has neutralised two suspected bandits and recovered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) during separate security operations in Bungudu Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Yazid Abubakar, said in a statement on Tuesday that armed hoodlums invaded the Funture area of Rugar Buda village through Nahuce District at about 12.30am on May 26, firing sporadically to create panic among residents.

He said police operatives and other security personnel stationed in Nahuce swiftly responded to the distress call and engaged the attackers in a gun duel.

“During the encounter, two bandits were neutralised, while others escaped into the forest with possible gunshot injuries,” he said.

A vigilante member, Kabiru Auwal, 35, from Gwargwabe area, sustained a gunshot injury on his left hand, resulting in a fracture. He is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.

DSP Abubakar added that patrol and confidence-building operations had been intensified in the area to prevent further attacks.

In a related development, the newly established Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), in collaboration with the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD-CBRN) team, discovered and neutralised a pressure plate IED along the Bilbis–Kuncin Kalgo Road on May 25.

The police said the device, suspected to have been planted by terrorists to target security personnel and civilians, was safely evacuated and destroyed without casualties.

The command said the operation successfully rendered the area safe for public movement.
