Three suspected armed robbers have been killed in a gun fight with operatives of the Anti-Vice Squad of the Nigeria Police Force Zone Headquarters, Umuahia, Abia State along Udi-Ozalla Road, Enugu.

The Enugu State Police Command spokesman, Ebere Amaraizu who confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Enugu said the robbers were, however, overpowered by the operatives who smashed the gang and recovered their weapons.

Amaraizu said that the Enugu state commissioner of police Danmallam Mohammed has commended the operatives for their feat, although some of the gang members must have escaped with serious bullet wounds.

He said the police in the state were prepared to make sure that the residents of the state and its environs would enjoy the forthcoming yuletide without incidents by fishing out the criminals from the safe havens and rewarding them in line with letters of the law.

According to the spokesman, the Commissioner gave the commendation when the team visited his office with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Awkunanaw Division, Csp Mike Onuh  on Monday to brief him on the success of the operation.

Amaraizu explained that the operatives “had through intelligence information and a well coordinated operation along Udi Ozalla Road, launched an onslaught on the hideouts of suspected hoodlums and in the ensuing gun battle, three of the suspected hoodlums were fatally injured and later confirmed dead.”

He said that the “ensuing gun duel between the operatives and suspected hoodlums may have left some of the fleeing gang members” with various degrees of injuries hence the “command advised members of the public particularly hospital operators to watch out for those that will visit their hospital with injuries suspected to be that of bullet and report promptly to any nearby police station or formation for necessary action.”
