The police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have commenced an investigation into the killing of a commercial motorcyclist and the injuring of 9 others following a mob attack in Kurudu community, along the Nyanya–Karshi road in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).

Abuja Metro gathered that the victims, all commercial motorcycle riders, were attacked in the early hours of Saturday at Zone A of the community after being accused by some youths of alleged involvement in a robbery incident.

The cyclists were said to have been sleeping in a private school premises where they had been permitted to lodge.

The proprietor of the school, Emmanuel Osamor, said he had provided the riders with a room and a store last year to support security around the premises.

“Their presence helped reduce cases of theft and vandalism in the school, which we previously suspected were carried out by scavengers,” he said.

Osamor explained that he received a distress call around 2am from a community leader informing him that the riders had been rounded up and attacked by youths following a robbery incident in the area.

“I later met them at the police station where I gave my statement. It is a very unfortunate incident,” he added.

A resident, Muhammad Usman, told Abuja Metro that the attackers stormed the school after the actual robbers had fled, accusing the motorcyclists of being members of the gang.

“Most of the victims sustained machete cuts, and some were even thrown into drainage channels. There was also an attempt to burn their motorcycles, but some of the youths resisted that move,” he said.

An Abuja-based human rights activist, Nura Muktar, identified the deceased as Muhammad Danlami, a native of Kiyawa Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

He said the injured victims were taken to a police health facility in Abuja after the intervention of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), where they received treatment.

According to him, two of the victims, Yau Adamu and Abdulmudallib Adamu, remain hospitalised due to the severity of their injuries.

Confirming the incident, the DPO of Kurudu Division, CSP Bawa Musa, said the case has been transferred to the FCT Police Command for further investigation.
