In furtherance of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) directive on arms and ammunition recovery, the Delta State Police Command said it has recorded substantial success.

Addressing journalists on Monday at the Command headquarters in Asaba, the Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Alhaji Mustafa disclosed that between 1st March and 1st April, 2018, the Command mopped up 200 firearms and 3,789 ammunitions.

"In compliance with the IGP’s directives, I made a passionate appeal requesting members of the public to surrender, through their Area Commands and Divisional Police Stations, all illegal and prohibited firearms at their disposal to the Command within the period of 21 days with effect from 1st March, 2018.

"It is gratifying to note therefore that between then and now there has been substantial compliance with the directives and that the following arms and ammunition have so far been mopped up and recovered by the Command", Mustafa said.

According to him, the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) recovered one hundred (100) locally made single barrel guns, two (2) locally made double barrel gun, eight (8) pump action guns,  one (1) SMG rifle No. 073933, one (1) Air rifle (BEEMAN No.00401016), one (1) unserviceable AK47 rifle with cut to butt and muzzle, twenty-five (25) locally made cut-to-size (single double barrel) guns, six (6) locally made pistols, one (1) FNC rifle No.01684 and two (2) rounds of ammunitions

Sapele Division mopped up two (2) locally made single barrel pistols, two (2) locally made cut-to-size single barrel guns, one (1) English made cut to size double barrel gun, four (4) live cartridges and two (2) cut-to-size double guns.

Ogwashi-Uku Division recovered six (6) cut–to-size double barrel guns, two (2) locally made pistols, while ‘A’ Division Warri recovered four (4) cut-to-size double barrel guns, four (4) locally made Pistols, two (2) expended Cartridges and one (1) live Cartridge.

The CP further stated that Area Command Warri also retrieved three (3) locally made pistols, four (4) double barrel cut-to-size guns, one (1) locally made single barrel cut-to-size gun and eight (8) live cartridges, while ‘B’ Division Warri Seven (7) cut-to-size locally made pistols, three (3) live ammunition, five (expanded cartridges, two Pump Action, one G3 rifle, one FNC rifle and 145 rounds of 9.56mm ammunition.

Ovwian Aladja Division got one (1) locally made single barrel gun, one (1) locally made double barrel gun and two live cartridges, one foreign (1) made cut-to-size gun, three (3) locally made cut-to-size pistols, one (1) locally made cut-to-size gun, two (2) locally made cut-to-size double barrel gun, two (2) live and expended cartridges and one (1) cut-to-size single barrel pistol and two live cartridges.

At the Anti-Kidnapping Department, one (1) English Made double barrel gun, three thousand seven hundred and eighty one live cartridges (3,781), while Ugberikoko Division, Effurun, mopped up four (4) locally cut-to-size guns, three (3) live cartridges, one (1) empty cartridge and one (1) battle axe were recovered.

The CP said the command will not rest on its oars but will further intensify efforts at mopping up any illegal or prohibited firearms within the state.

"All persons who have failed to take advantage of the 21 days of grace from 1/3/2018 – 21/3/2018 which had been extended to them should have themselves to blame and therefore be prepared to face the full weight of the Law", CP Mustafa warned.

He however called on members of the public to avail the Command with useful information in this regard.
