The Lagos State police command has announced the arrest last Sunday of two Indian hemp merchants along the Lekki waterways in the state.
The suspects, the police said, are members of a syndicate that specialised in the distribution of narcotic substances like Indian hemp, tramadol and codeine through the waterways.
The gang’s operational network, Daily Trust learnt, ran from the Lagos backwaters to Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Edo, Delta and Anambra states, from where the illicit substances were redistributed to other parts of the country.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, who confirmed the arrest, said that operatives of the command attached to the Maroko division had intercepted a red Volkswagen Gulf saloon car registration number KJA 377 EY on Sunday September 16, 2018 in the afternoon.
Edgal said when the car was searched, seven bags of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp were recovered from the two occupants, Tajudeen Amanda, 60, and Rasheed Kehinde, 31.
“The suspects, who were arrested by the team at Ghetto waterside, Marwa, Lekki Phase one, have confessed to the crime,” he added.
