The Yobe State Police Command has arrested two suspected members of a kidnapping syndicate operating in Gujba Local Government Area and recovered 26 goats believed to have been stolen.
The command said the suspects were arrested following the escape of a kidnap victim, whose information led police operatives to the alleged syndicate.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Dungus Abdulkarim, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Damaturu.
He said the incident began on July 7 when the Gujba Divisional Police Headquarters received a distress report that unknown gunmen had abducted one Idi Musa of Kolmamaji Village in Gujba LGA and made away with his Kasea motorcycle.
According to the statement, police operatives immediately launched a coordinated search-and-rescue operation while intensifying intelligence gathering to rescue the victim and track down the abductors.
“The victim escaped from the kidnappers’ hideout on July 10 and reported to the police. During debriefing, he provided credible information that aided the ongoing investigation,” the statement said.
Acting on the intelligence, police operatives arrested two suspects identified as Musa Damuna, 23, and Yusufa Muhammad Bello, 21, both of Mutai Ward in Gujba LGA, on July 11.
The police said 26 goats suspected to have been stolen were recovered during the operation.
Preliminary investigation, according to the command, revealed that the suspects had already disposed of the victim’s motorcycle before their arrest.
The police said efforts were ongoing to recover the motorcycle and apprehend other members of the syndicate who remain at large.
The suspects are currently in police custody and will be prosecuted after the conclusion of the investigation, the statement added.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Usman Kanfani Jibrin, charged officers and men of the command to sustain proactive and intelligence-led policing to curb criminal activities across the state.
He also urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies, assuring them of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
