The FCT Police Command has arrested five suspected cable vandals in Mpape and Masaka areas of the city.

The command’s spokesman, DSP Anjuguri J. Manzah, said Sunday Etiese, 35, and Joseph Thomas, 24, were arrested in Mpape district while attempting to vandalise street light cables.

“On 4/10/17 at about 0200hrs acting on a tip-off, police operatives attached to Kubwa division on patrol intercepted and arrested the above named suspects while attempting to vandalise street light cables along Kubwa expressway. 

“Two shovels used by the suspects in committing the unlawful act were recovered at the scene,” he said. 

He said the suspects, in their respective statements, have confessed to the crime. They claimed to have vandalised cables in the area on two occasions and were paid N14,000 each by their master (now at large) for every operation.

He said the suspects have been transferred to the Command Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for investigation.

Manzah said three other suspects, Justice Francis, 36, Matthew Olanipekun, 29, and Emmanuel Soseline, 30, were also arrested in connection with vandalising of NITEL cables.

“Similarly, on 4/10/17 at about 0530hrs, police operatives attached to Asokoro Division, following a tip-off, arrested three suspects who specialised in vandalising NITEL cables. 

“The suspects were arrested around Power House Junction, Asokoro while they were burning some of the vandalised cables. 

“They have all confessed to the crime. Effort has been intensified to arrest their cohorts and the suspects and exhibits will soon be transferred to the Command Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for discreet investigation,” he said.
