The Yobe State Police Command arrested eight suspected drug dealers and violent crime suspects during a raid on a notorious criminal hideout in Damaturu, the state capital.
The suspects were apprehended by operatives of the newly inaugurated Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) during an intelligence-led operation at the New Marte Ghetto on Wednesday.
The command’s spokesman, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, said the operation was part of ongoing efforts to tackle violent crimes, drug abuse, thuggery and other criminal activities across the state.
According to him, those arrested include Usman Hassan, alias Bapani, 20; Bukar Sale, alias Benzima, 18; Adamu Musa, 18; Hassan Abdullahi, alias Gante, 20; Ibrahim Ibrahim, alias Bomboy, 20; Usman Sale, alias Ado Gonja, 21; Mohammed Salisu, alias RP Damboa; and Bako Mohammed, alias Balande, 18.
He said all the suspects are residents of the Pompomari Sabon Kwalta area of Damaturu.
Abdulkarim said exhibits recovered from them included suspected Indian hemp, other illicit substances, a cutlass, a knife and other items believed to be linked to criminal activities.
He added that a large quantity of Yobe State University script papers was recovered from one of the suspects, while another was found with a cutlass and suspected illicit substances.
“Investigation is ongoing to determine the extent of the suspects’ involvement in criminal activities within the metropolis and to identify possible accomplices. They will be prosecuted upon conclusion of investigations,” he said.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Usman Kanfani Jibrin, reiterated the command’s zero-tolerance stance against violent crimes, drug abuse, hooliganism and other forms of criminality.
