A yet to be identified police officer was on Sunday killed in a tragic road accident on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos after a driver rammed into him while he was riding a motorcycle.

The incident, which occurred near Adekunle inward Iyana Oworo, involved a Lexus vehicle with registration number EPE 765 JN and a Bajaj motorcycle ridden by the deceased officer.

Eye witnesses claimed that the police officer died instantly from injuries sustained in the collision.

The driver of the Lexus vehicle was said to have immediately reported himself at the Adekunle Police Division following the incident.

The Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed the incident.

He said officials of the traffic agency swiftly responded to distress calls and arrived at the scene alongside officers of the Nigeria Police Force to manage the situation.

Taofiq noted that emergency safety measures and traffic control operations were immediately initiated to prevent further accidents and ensure the safety of motorists using the bridge.

“Traffic cones and warning devices were strategically positioned around the affected area while police operatives commenced documentation and investigations into the cause of the accident.

“Officials also carried out evacuation and recovery operations to remove the damaged vehicles and restore normal traffic flow along the bridge corridor.

“Despite the severity of the incident, traffic movement around the axis was effectively controlled due to the prompt intervention of LASTMA officials,” he said.

Reacting to the development, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, urged motorists to obey speed limits and avoid reckless driving capable of endangering lives and public safety.

He stressed the need for road users to cultivate responsible driving habits and comply strictly with traffic regulations to reduce avoidable road accidents and fatalities across Lagos State.
