Hearing began yesterday at an Igbosere chief magistrate court in a case of unlawful possession of arms against a 20-year-old man, Monsuru Lawal, who the police described as a secret cult gang leader.
The Lagos police command said operatives from its Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS), arrested, following a tip-off received from some concerned residents of Oworonshoki, Bariga, the accused at the Gbagada open field, Bariga, Lagos, on September 29, 2018 while he and members of his secret cult gang, the Eiye confraternity, were preparing to stage an attack on some people in the area.
Police counsel, Abraham Fadipe, said that though other members of the gang fled, the police were able to arrest Lawal in possession of a gun. He was charged on a three-count charge of unlawful possession of firearm and being a member of an unlawful society called the Eiye confraternity.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Magistrate M. O. Ope-Agbe granted him bail in the sum of N1 million, with two sureties in like sum.
Ope-Agbe adjourned the case till November 13, 2018 for mention.
He then ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison custody till he perfects the bail conditions.
