The Borno State Police Command has launched an investigation into the alleged suicide of a young woman in Gubio Local Government Area, reportedly linked to a forced marriage.
Reports earlier on Monday claimed that the woman took her own life after her father allegedly compelled her to marry his friend.
However, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, said in a statement that the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, has ordered a discreet investigation to ascertain the authenticity and circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The command wishes to inform the general public that a discreet investigation has been ordered to determine the true facts of the matter,” Daso said.
He urged members of the public with credible information to assist the police, while cautioning against the spread of unverified reports that could incite panic or distort facts.
“The command remains dedicated to protecting the rights, safety, and dignity of all citizens. Spreading false or misleading information is punishable under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015,” the statement added.
Daso assured residents of the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order, ensuring accountability, and upholding justice.
