The Benue State Police Command has recovered 117 rounds of live ammunition from a suspect in the Ukum Local Government Area of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, DSP Udeme Edet, stated that security operatives acted on credible intelligence on February 6, 2026, at about 8:45 am.
The intelligence concerned the movement of a male suspect, identified as Saamoga (also known as Aleki), who was allegedly transporting live ammunition from Gbagir to Zaki-Biam on a commercial motorcycle.
Edet said that police patrol teams were immediately deployed to the Tse Dubem area of Ukum LGA, where they initiated a stop-and-search operation.
According to Edet, upon sighting the operatives, the suspect reportedly jumped off the motorcycle and attempted to flee.
The PPRO added that the suspect was immobilized by a shot to the leg and subsequently arrested.
Edet added that a search of his belongings led to the recovery of 117 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition concealed inside socks within his handbag. Local charms and a mobile phone were also recovered.
According to the police, during preliminary investigations, the suspect allegedly confessed that the ammunition was being transported to Taraba State.
The suspect was taken to the General Hospital in Zaki-Biam for medical treatment, where he later died while receiving care.
