Police operatives in Benue State successfully repelled attacks on two communities in Guma Local Government Area of the state.

According to a police signal, the gunmen around 7am on August 11 attacked a farm in Yelwata.

The operatives upon hearing gunshots tracked the attackers who were later overpowered and fled back to the forest.

However, three persons working on their farm were shot dead before the arrival of the police.

The signal added that a protest was organized by women in the community who accused soldiers of failing to respond to the attacks, leaving the police to repel the herdsmen.

The signal read, “POLICE MEN ON TACTICAL DUTY AT YELWATA X GUMA LGA MINE X HEARD FIRING AT THE FARMS BEHIND YELWATA VILLAGE X ON APPROACH THEY ENCOUTERED GUNMEN FIRING AND APPROACHING YELWATA TOWN X SIS AND MOPOL 18 MEN MINE STATIONED IN YELWATA ENGAGED THEM IN SHOOTOUT X BEFORE THEY FLED BACK TO THE FOREST BORDERING YELWATA AND NASARAWA STATE X WHILE COMBING THE AREA X IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT X THE BANDITS KILLED THREE FARMERS AND WOUNDED THREE OTHERS X THE VICTIMS HAD GONE EARLY TO THEIR FARMS X MEANWHILE WOMEN FROM YELWATA ARE CURRENTLY PROTESTING X BLOCKING THE MAKURDI LAFIA ROAD X THEY ARE ASKING THE ARMY UNIT IN YELWATA TO LEAVE X BECAUSE THEY CLAIMED THEY DID NOT REPEL THE ATTACKERS WITH THE POLICE X MEANWHILE SOME TOP STATE GOVERNMENT FUNCTIONARIES ARE ADDRESSING THE PROTESTERS X THE WOUNDED WERE TAKEN TO TEACHING HOSPITAL MAKURDI X WHILE RELATIONS ARE ARRANGING FOR THE BURIALS OF THE DEAD X”

The police also foiled another herdsmen attack at Udie town in same council area.

“ALSO EARLIER MOPOL 12 MINE AT UDIE TOWN ALSO IN GUMA LGA MINE HAD REPELLED SOME SUSPECTED FULANI BANDITS WHO ATTACKED THE TOWN AT ABOUT 0500 HRS DATE X THERE WAS NO CASUALTIES X ADEQUATE TACTICAL TEAMS HAVE BEEN DEPLOYED TO YELWATA AND UDIE AXIS X WITH DC OPS MINE CORDINATING X FURTHER DEVELOPMENT WILL BE COMMUNICATED YOURS X AIGZON DOPS MKD XXXXXX,” the signal added.
