Police operatives attached to the FCT Police Command said they have rescued two girls, who were abducted by gang of cattle rustlers penultimate Monday, after attacking their home in the outskirts of Bwari town.
The rustlers were said to have killed their father and his eldest son before kidnapping the girls.
Crime Desk reported last week that the gang numbering 13, left behind a phone number through which they could be reached for a deal on how the girls could be released.
But in a statement issued on Monday by the command’s spokesperson, Anjuguri Manzah, an Assistant Superintendent, the girls were freed safely by the police after they engaged the bandits, who were armed with AK 47. The statement said the bandits shot sporadically on sighting the police and that the police responded in a fierce battle.
“A member of the gang, who sustained a fatal injury and gave his name as Auta, was arrested during the encounter and is currently on admission at a police medical facility, while some others fled the scene with gun injuries,’’ the statement added.
Crime Desk learnt that the bandits had earlier demanded a ransom of N7million for the release of the two girls.
But the police statement said no ransom was paid before the girls were rescued and that efforts are on to arrest the fleeing hoodlums.
Three motorcycles and a machete were recovered as exhibits at the scene of the incident, the police said.
