The police in Akwa Ibom State have rescued 20 Ghanaians who were trafficked into the country and held in a compound in Obio Etoi village, Uyo.
DSP Timfon John, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, released a statement to journalists in Uyo on Wednesday, confirming the rescue.
John said that acting on a formal request for assistance from the Ghana Police Service and Interpol, police operatives successfully rescued the victims on Monday.
The operation was a collaborative effort.
She explained that police, acting on credible information, surrounded a well-fenced building at about 4:17 p.m. on Monday, August 18. The raid, he added, led to the rescue of 10 males and 10 females (whose names were withheld), all confirmed to be Ghanaian nationals.
John added that the victims appeared disoriented and were unable to provide useful information, leading investigators to suspect they may have been hypnotized.
The command’s spokesperson said that the investigation is ongoing and further developments will be communicated to the public as they become available.
