The FCT Police Command has warned members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), known as Shi’ites, against holding any form of protest or procession in Abuja in the FCT.
The Commissioner of Police (CP), Benneth Igweh handed down the warning in a statement by the command’s spokeswoman, SP Adeh Josephine, on Monday night.
He said the warning followed intelligence information at the command’s disposal that the proscribed organization was planning a procession to mark the 2024 Islamic calendar day of Ashura.
He said the Shi’ites’ antecedents had shown that such activity carried out by their members often resulted in significant disturbances, leading to anarchy and chaos within the territory.
He, therefore, called on any individual or member of the proscribed organisation to refrain from or shun any intended form of protest or procession in the nation’s capital, saying the command would not hesitate to use every legal means necessary to halt or incapacitate anyone that dared violate the ban by the police.
