A police corporal has been arrested for allegedly shooting the wife of a tricycle operator to death early Thursday at Isheri-Oshun area of Lagos.
The corporal attached to Isheri-Oshun Police Station was said to be on an illegal stop-and- search duty with four others when the incident occurred.
The victim, Idongisiet Ekpo, was in company of her husband and four children at the time of the incident. They were reportedly on their way home when they ran into the police road block.
Witnesses said the police corporal opened fire at the tricycle conveying the Ekpo family when Idongisiet’s husband who was at the wheel moved after he allegedly refused to part with N100 requested by the policemen at the road block.
Daily Trust learnt that the gunshot from the corporal killed the deceased on the spot, while her husband narrowly escaped death.
He however sustained serious injury and was admitted at Igando General hospital.
Confirming the incident, Lagos State Commissioner of Police Fatai Owoseni said the corporal has been arrested and would be charged for murder as soon as the ongoing orderly room trial was concluded.
He also revealed that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Isheri-Oshun Police Station, as well as the entire police team involved in the incident have been queried for disobeying the directive of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) on the dismantling of all road blocks.
