The Lagos State Police Command, on Thursday, said it dismantled several illegal checkpoints mounted by some security operatives in the state and arrested one policeman, three officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), three Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC) officers and 23 civilians.
City & Crime learnt that the raid was carried out on Tuesday by the CP’s special taskforce.
The state’s police spokesman, Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the arrest, said it was carried out in the Iganmu and Apapa axes.
Hundeyin said the Commissioner of Police (CP), Idowu Owohunwa, set up a task force in response to reports of incessant extortion of motorists by thugs and recalcitrant law enforcement officers.
He said 18 of them were arrested last week Friday and Saturday in the Mile 2 area.
He further said, “CP Owohunwa has warned that any law enforcement personnel, irrespective of agency, found complicit in extortion would be arrested and dealt with in accordance with the law.”
