A livestock dealer on the outskirts of Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, has allegedly been gunned down by an operative of the anti-kidnapping unit of the Kogi State Police Command. 

The deceased, Ibrahim Ali, (aka Mbaba), was the Manager of BB Umar Livestock. He was allegedly shot dead by one Sgt. Ibrahim Isah at Ganaja Village, on the outskirts of Lokoja on Tuesday.

Daily Trust learnt that trouble started when the said policeman, who was riding a motorcycle through the village, knocked down a young girl who was hawking. His refusal to attend to her infuriated the youths who mobilised and seized his motorcycle, demanding that the cop take the injured girl to the hospital. 

The policeman, rather than show concern for the girl, allegedly called his colleagues who arrived the scene with arms. 

In the ensuing confusion, the policeman allegedly grabbed a rifle from inside the patrol vehicle his colleagues came with and fired a shot, killing the deceased on the spot. 

Following the killing, the youths went berserk and moved towards the Kogi State Police Command Headquarters, Lokoja, where they blocked the road.

The state government, reacting through its Security Adviser, Retired Navy Commander Jerry Omodara, said the killer would not go unpunished.

When contacted, spokesman of the Kogi Police Command, William Aya, said the policeman had been arrested on the orders of the state Commissioner of Police. 

Aja said the policeman would undergo orderly room trial after which appropriate action would be taken against him.
