A professor of Mathematics Education with the University of Jos, Professor Peter Ntasiri Lassa, has said that political interference in the running of education by both federal and state governments is affecting the quality of education.
Prof. Lassa, at a briefing in Abuja on the ‘Sorry State of Education in Nigeria’, said political differences between various tiers of governments had hampered the provision of quality education.
He said the problems of basic and secondary education which included poor infrastructure, burden of unqualified teachers, non-payment of teachers’ salary and others were as a result of the failure of the Universal Basic Education agencies to meet their goals.
Speaking on the poor standard of the tertiary institutions, the don said reforms are needed to reduce unnecessary strike actions.
He, however, called for the scrapping of Ordinary National Diploma (OND) in the nation, saying “OND is strange to our national policy on education 2004. The OND is offered under varying circumstances and time of study. It is lowering educational standard.”
