Speaking yesterday at an event on political violence organised by the Kano police command for all candidates in the state, Sule said First Republic politicians played politics of principles.
“The politicians at that time played politics of principles. They did not abuse one another. They respected one another. I have never heard Sardauna, Awolowo, Tafawa Balewa abusing their political opponents. Of course they criticised and discussed issues but not personality. Character assassination and use of abusive words were not in their politics,” he said.
He observed that it was because of the courtly manners exhibited by the First Republic politicians that Nigeria was respected all over the world.
The elder statesman further advised politicians to promote peace because all religions promote peace in their teachings, even as he admonished them that violence was never the reason that gives candidates the seats they aspire to win.
At the end of the event, gubernatorial and senatorial candidates in Kano were made to sign a non-violence agreement in the presence of the Kano State Police Commissioner Ibrahim K. Idris and other security chiefs.
