As the 2019 general elections draw nearer, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, has advised those seeking election into political offices to stop doling out money to street urchins,  widely known in the state as area boys.

Edgal gave this advice against the backdrop of the frequent fracas which often leads to murder among hoodlums when sharing money given them by politicians.

 Edgal’s advice came in the wake of the murder of one Adegoke Philip by some hoodlums after a political rally held recently at Bariga. 

Edgal said that the late Philip, was stabbed on August 20, 2017 by suspected members of the Eiye confraternity, led by one Lukuman Agboola, after a key local politician gave the gang a gift of N20,000. 

He said that Agboola, alias Baggo, had wanted to receive the money from the politician but a member of the Eiye cult he identified as Ahmed was faster and snatched the money from the politician.

This, according to the police boss, angered Agboola. He said, “This resulted in a big quarrel. Philip gave him a blow and they were separated and left the place. But the suspect (Agboola) did not forgive the deceased. The next day, August 21, 2017, he murdered the late Adegoke Philip.”

Edgal, who advised politicians to establish vocational centres to rehabilitate hoodlums, narrated how Agboola, 35, was arrested on May 1, 2018.

 He said, “A call from an unknown person informed us that Baggo (Agboola), a leader in the Eiye confraternity whose gang had been threatening people with guns at the New Garage area, Bariga, had been sighted in the area.

“We went into action immediately to arrest him. Our efforts paid off on May 1, 2018 when we tracked and arrested him on a bike along Ogo-Oluwa Street, Bariga, at about 2:00p.m. The said Lukuman was discovered to have caused the death of Adegoke Philip on August 21, 2017 in the company of deadly cult members, namely, Rainbow, Arinze, Segun, Adekunle, Asumo, Ade and Agbara.”
