The union made the call after its 80th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting co-hosted by Federal Polytechnic and Abububakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic, Bauchi, saying it has made enough concessions to government in the course of negotiations, insisting “government must play its own part, without further delay to avoid industrial disharmony.”
The lingering issues between ASUP and government include the non-establishment of a National Polytechnics Commission (NPC), failure of government to commence the re-negotiation of an agreement it entered with the union and the non-implementation/payment of arrears of CONTISS 15 migration for the lower cadres.
Others are the delay in the implementation of the NEEDS assessment report of public polytechnics in Nigeria, failure of government to release the White Paper on visitation panels to federal polytechnics, dichotomy between HND and degree holders, poor funding/discrimination of the polytechnic sector, deplorable state of some state polytechnics in the country and the continued appointment of rectors from outside the polytechnic sector.
A statement signed by ASUP’s National Publicity Secretary, Clement Chirman, also condemned what he termed the attempt by councils and managements of federal polytechnics Oko and Ado-Ekiti and the management of Adamawa State Polytechnic Yola to destabilize the activities of the union and to further attempt to proscribe its activities in the institutions.
