Poor funding affecting our activities – PCC

The chief commissioner, Public Complaints Commission (PCC), Abimbola Ayo-Yusuf, has lamented the lack of proper funding for its programmes and activities.

He spoke Tuesday in Abuja during a one-day commissioners’ retreat.

Ayo-Yusuf, whose tenure and that of 37 federal commissioners, will expire in few weeks, said that despite the challenges encountered, the PCC under his watch improved maximally on its core mandate

He said: “The PCC needs a lot of funding. A lot of awareness needs to be done, and all that is funded. The main problem with the commission is just the underfunding. If funds are right, we have the staff and capacity to get it right.

“Our tenure was characterised by quite a lot of daunting challenges, ranging from poor funding to multi-dimensional agitations from the staff of the commission, but with courage and sense of commitment, we were able to overcome them.

“When we compare when we came in to where we are today, our scorecard clearly shows that the fortune of the Nigerian ombudsman has greatly improved and can only get better, provided our successors share the same vision and mission we have for the commission and are bequeathing as a legacy.”

The secretary of the PCC, Salamatu Jummai Manman said: “We are giving and will continue to give our best, but we will do better if the government concentrates and gives us attention. We need attention – materials and funds.”
