Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr Dikko Suleiman, said the reading culture among primary school pupils in Nigeria has declined over years.
Sulieman, who made the remark during a two-day meeting between key education stakeholders in the country in Abuja, said urgent measures should be taken to address the poor reading habit in primary schools.
“Unless pupils can read and write, we cannot expect children to leave school with the knowledge, skills and values necessary to be active members of the Nigerian society and contribute to resolving local, national and global challenges of the 21st century,” he said.
He said UBEC was promoting ‘Jolly Phonics’ project to encourage all states to improve quality teaching in schools. Participants at the meeting pledged to improve student literacy and commended the commission for spending about N2.15 billion on teacher training.
