Poor welfare and remuneration by private law firms are identified as some of the major challenges faced by young lawyers in the country.
Chairman of the Young Lawyers’ Forum of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Kano state chapter, Barrister Abdullahi Abdussalam Bature stated this during the annual congress meeting of the forum at the weekend.
Barrister Bature said young lawyers were being paid meager amount in most of the private chambers they practice, while some were not receiving anything as a pay.
“In fact those that receive higher amount are not up to the standard obtained in other countries. After all much work what they get is not up to N100, 000. And the entire wo load in the chambers is on the young lawyers, who write briefs; go to court and so on.
“Getting the Seal, which authenticate someone as a certified barrister, is another problem because most of the chambers are not willing to do the seals for young lawyers serving in their respective chambers,” Barrister Bature lamented.
Highlighting on the forum’s task, he explained that the forum was formed to see that all young lawyers from 1-7 years of practice, were under one umbrella, “to encourage the young lawyers by enhancing intellectual and social gathering to improve the relationship between the young and experienced lawyers for them to also grow”.
