Ikuru regretted that Nigeria today is not able to feed herself but spends billions of naira importing commodities that can be locally produced from other countries, some of the countries he lamented that Nigeria is more endowed with agriculturally.
“Despite the plethora of policies Nigeria’s agriculture is still struggling with, farmers still use rudimentary methods with no significant mechanization. For Nigeria to attain food security, agriculture mechanization strategy must be strengthened from a number of fronts,” he said.
He argued that for any agricultural program to remain pro-active, it must be backed up by law and domiciled in the hands of real farmers not with brief-case-carrying-farmers. He regrets that the discovery of oil in commercial quantity in Nigeria redirected the nation’s priority from being a food producer to a net food importer.
