For years, residents of Potiskum Local Government Area in Yobe State have been struggling with a healthcare crisis that goes far beyond just the occasional illness. The Accident and Emergency Unit at the Potiskum Specialist Hospital, woefully inadequate for the population it serves, has become a symbol of neglect and despair.

The current unit, cramped and under-equipped, is simply incapable of handling the influx of patients. This dire situation forces many to wait outside, exposed to the elements and vulnerable to further harm. The lack of proper space and resources not only compromises patient care but also poses a significant threat to their health and well-being.

The plight of Potiskum residents is a reminder of the inequities that persist in Nigeria’s healthcare system. While some communities enjoy access to modern facilities and advanced treatment options, others, like Potiskum, are left to battle with outdated and inadequate infrastructure. This disparity is simply unacceptable and demands immediate attention.

The need for a larger and better-equipped Accident and Emergency Unit in Potiskum is not a luxury, it is a necessity. The health and safety of an entire community depend on it. The current situation is unsustainable and puts countless lives at risk.

The time for empty promises and bureaucratic delays is over. We need action. We need the government, both at the state and federal levels, to prioritize the health and well-being of Potiskum residents. We need them to allocate the necessary resources to expand the Potiskum Specialist Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit and equip it with the latest technology and medical equipment.

Also, this is not just about healthcare, it is about human dignity. It is about ensuring that every citizen, regardless of their location or socioeconomic status, has access to quality medical care. The residents of Potiskum have waited long enough. It is time for their voices to be heard and their needs to be met.
