Poultry farmers celebrate World Egg Day

Dr Onallo said Nigeria is the number one producer of eggs in its thriving poultry industry in Africa, which has consistently, contributed over 25% of the gross domestic product (GDP) to the economy.
He said if the nation wants to achieve the objectives of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) of the United Nations, the importance of poultry products such as chicken and eggs which contribute about 36.5% protein intake of Nigerians should be taken seriously, adding that agriculture is key to the successful attainment of the MDGs.
In his address, Dr Ayeke of the European Union stressed that the high level of malnutrition in Nigeria constitutes a setback to the country’s development. “It is estimated that one billion people in the world are currently underfed and undernourished. Globally we have limited resources, yet we need to produce more food.”
Sarah Abagal, a Nutrition Expert with the National Hospital Abuja extols the virtues of eating an egg a day, which can significantly improve the health of the people especially the children, people without life-style-related diseases and pregnant women.
She however advised people with history of life-style-related disease to take two to three eggs a week.
Dr Amaka Nwoga of Norgem Nigeria and Novus International, a company that provides solutions to agricultural livestock industries said the company is ready to partner with livestock industries in Nigeria to increase animal production in the country.
Highlight of the occasion was the donation of crates of eggs to orphanages by Fatima Seghosime, Managing Director, Dansof Farms Limited, Edo State.
