“Developed countries are already using battery cages for poultry production and Nigeria has started using it recently, but I urge them to continue using it in their poultry farms,” he said.
He highlighted the importance of battery cages, saying that the cages have conveyor belts that distribute chicken feeds and eggs.
“There are different types of battery cages made by various countries such as China, India, USA, Turkey, Germany and Brazil, each with distinctive features. Battery cages from China have air conditioner, the cooling air doesn’t have negative effect on the hens and after they lay eggs, it has a conveyor belt that will take the eggs from the cages. It also distributes chicken feeds.”
He said chickens (layers) sometimes break their eggs, adding that it is impossible for chickens to eat feeds without scattering it.
“But if you are using battery cages, it will prevent all these from happening, because they are in a cage. What they will do is to push their heads outside to feed and drink.
“If you don’t have battery cages, chickens defecate where they eat and drink, this is prone to outbreak of diseases. But if you are using battery cages and one of the chickens had a particular disease, the rest will not be affected, because it has a special place where each hen will eat, drink and defecate independently.”
He mentioned the types of battery cages, ranging from 86 to 105 units, consisting of rows and columns.
“The capacity of the battery cages made by various countries differs. They were designed to accommodate 86 to 105 chickens.”
He said that Nigeria’s battery cages were poorly made, adding that they used to leak water that spoils chicken feeds.
