Poultry farmers affected by the outbreak of avian influenza in 2015 and 2016 will soon be paid compensation for their losses, new President of the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Mr. Ezikiel Ibrahim, has announced.

He spoke yesterday at the ongoing Nigeria Poultry Show in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

Mr. Ibrahim assured the victims that all the necessary steps towards the payment were at the final stage of processing.

The PAN president regretted that the prices of maize and soy beans had increased more than 200 per cent within the last few years without a corresponding increase in the selling price of poultry products such as eggs and poultry meat.

Other problems confronting the sector, according to him, included high interest rate on borrowing, high cost of inputs, outbreak of avian influenza, multiple taxation, high cost of electricity and smuggling of poultry products.

He, however, appealed to the poultry farmers to, in the face of current challenges in the industry, be efficient in the management of their production activities.

“Not only that, they should also try as much as possible to develop sustainable market plan in such a way that the issue of glut is reduced to the barest minimum,” he said. 

The president assured small scale poultry farmers of necessary support in terms of training and capacity building, micro-credit and financial innovativeness during his tenure.
