Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has attributed the rise of Boko Haram insurgency in the North East to poverty and lack of education among youths.
Speaking on Monday during a visit by members of the Executive Intelligence Management Course 18 of the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS), who were on a study tour to Yobe State, the governor – represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Baba Malam Wali – said illiteracy and poverty have significantly contributed to the growth of insurgency in the region.
“Illiteracy and poverty have played a significant role in the recreation of Boko Haram. It is very important that we continue to work on these issues,” Buni said.
He stressed that tackling insurgency requires addressing its root causes, warning that failure to do so would continue to pose serious challenges.
The governor reaffirmed the Yobe State Government’s commitment to combating poverty and illiteracy through economic empowerment initiatives, reconstruction of dilapidated schools, and recruitment of teachers to transform the educational sector.
Earlier, the leader of the NISS delegation, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi Yar’adua, explained that the visit was to study the state’s security environment and identify best practices to inform national security policies.
He noted that the exercise would culminate in a comprehensive report aimed at guiding policy decisions on security management.
